Many good men and women have become cynical because they believe
that people cannot change. The hearts of many have been hardened
by bitterness because they believe that love and mercy can exist
only in the next life. My wife and children rescued me from this
cynicism, hard-heartedness and bitterness. Every time my wife,
Emilia, and I discuss the education of our three children and
how they ought to spend their time; every time I see José Agustín,
his teachers and classmates, and hope for new and better schools
for all young children; every time I watch my four-year-old daughter,
Rocío del Consuelo, engrossed in her small chores and
homework, and dream of a world that offers honest work to all
men and women; every time Juan Pablo, my two-year-old son, puts
his hand in mine, I feel called once again to help build a society
based on faith, mutual trust and love. Every night, when we pray
together, I know that it is Jesus who inspires these good desires
in my heart. He protects us in the love that we share as a family,
for he too has the heart of a son and knew the love of a mother,
the Blessed Virgin Mary.
