Every child needs a mother and a father, and has a right to the care and protection of both. The value of the formation and education given by mother and father, together, in a loving relationship, does not derive from some religious principle; it is a natural human value recognizable to all.

“Children need the presence and care of both parents, who carry out their duty as educators above all through the influence of the way they live. The quality of the relationship between the spouses has profound psychological effects on children and greatly conditions both the way they relate to their surroundings and the other relationships which they will develop throughout life.”

(John Paul II, Message for the XVIII World Day of Peace, 1 January 1995)

The growth and development of children depends on the love and care they receive from mother and father. This not a religious prejudice; it is a truth we can discern in the nature of the human person. A person´s character, and his/her ability to make a valuable contribution to society, is forged during the first years of life; thus, every child needs to see how his/her parents love one another, and to learn that love is never a burden.
