The human person is male or female, two ways of being human which are equal in dignity.

"Every human person is vested with dignity. Women are not worth less than men. Women are all too often regarded as objects, because of that male egotism which has taken many forms in the past, and which is still influential in our own time."

(John Paul II, General Audience, 22 June, 1994)

The Catholic Church defends the true dignity of woman. Equality between men and women is based on diversity, on the fact that both were created in the image and likeness of God.

Motherhood and the family do not limit women. They allow women to develop as people in society. In the family, both partners take on special functions and complement each other. Attitudes which oppress women or show a lack of respect for them can never be justified.
