The commandment “Honor your father and your mother”, is about the family, its closeness and solidarity, the affectionate respect which family members have for each other, the myriad values that are lived out in a communion of people.

1. "Since God has first loved us (cf. 1 Jn 4:10), love is now no longer a mere “command; it is the response to the gift of love with which God draws near to us."
11. "Corresponding to the image of a monotheistic God is monogamous marriage. Marriage based on exclusive and definitive love becomes the icon of the relationship between God and his people and vice versa."
14. "Love can be 'commanded' because it has first been given."

Benedict XVI, Encyclical Deus Caritas est, 25 December 2005, nos 1, 11 y 14.

Commentary

"Honor your father and mother" is a commandment which forms a hinge between the two sections of the law, the commandments entreating us to love God, and those asking us to love others. The union between a man and a woman who love each other creates that unity of "one flesh": the expression of this love coincides radically with that through which they can pass life on to their children. For this reason, human fertility is inseparable from the couple's love for each other. This special unity is a reflection of the power of God's creative love for the person of the child, conceived with the parents' bodies.  The subject engendered in love is called into existence through the love of God, created in His image and likeness. To be a child is to be the fruit of personal love, received as a gift. The love with which God first loves each person, and the loves that are allied with this primary love, are the ultimate guarantee of the absolute value of each human person.
