The tremendous vigor and inexhaustible energy within every family have only one source, and that is love.

“The gospel of love is the inexhaustible source of all that nourishes the human family as a communion of persons."

John Paul II, Letter to Families Gratissimam sane, International Year of the Family, 2 February 1994, no. 16.

Commentary

Christian marriage is established once and for all when the man and woman become husband and wife by giving themselves to each other. From then on, everything is a labor of love and a manifestation of love. The love between husband and wife, who made their promises before God, is a never-ending fount of strength, surging forth through the action of the Holy Spirit and the cooperation of each spouse. Work is not the most important factor in raising a family. Nor is caring for the children the first priority. Before these comes the love that husband and wife have for each other, which leads them to give their all to their family, to bring their children up in the Christian faith, and which sustains them as they continue to sacrifice themselves for their children even after they have left home.
