The life of a family is the life of its love. Keeping it alive, making it grow in the different phases of life, and nurturing it carefully whenever it seems to wither.

"To experience love and in this way to cause the light of God to enter into the world—this is the invitation I would like to extend with the present Encyclical."

Benedict XVI, Encyclical Deus caritas est, 25 December 2005, no 39.

Commentary

Living our love in marriage requires us to educate ourselves for love, so that it does not get reduced to the bare minimum, and is not confined solely to the avoidance of conflicts. The wife and husband must ask how they love each other, while remaining aware of their differences.  They should ask how they can show their affection, what concrete form this can take. They should ask whether they manage to keep their love young and strong, or try to recover what has been lost. Whether they think of each other during the day, with loving words and gestures. Whether they are getting to know each other better as the years pass by, because each person is always a very profound mystery. Whether they serve each other and their children. Whether their love is full of joy.
